Session 4: The Art of the Enhanced Lecture (Part I) - Key Components of Structure and Student Engagement

The lecture mode is the oldest teaching method and the traditional lecture method is the most widely used across the world (Smith & Valentine, 2012).  However, when compared to other teaching methods, it is often not as effective in areas such as student retention of information, transfer of knowledge, and problem-solving.

This Fall we will offer Part I, where we will focus on the critical components of how you can structure the content, while engaging the students in their learning. Part II will be in Spring 2024 and will focus on leveraging students’ emotions to enhance learning. In this interactive session, we will explore ways and conditions under which the lecture method can be more effective; e.g., in its preparation and organization, delivery, and student-learning checkpoints.

*This workshop counts towards completion of any of CITL's Teaching Certificates. To learn more about our Teaching Certificate program please visit https://go.illinois.edu/teaching_certificates.
