Session 5: Learning that Lasts: Strategies for Significant, Enduring Learning

Barbara Oakley and her colleagues say that “students fool themselves into thinking they’re learning.”   Students may believe that they “understand” the content and that they can easily retrieve what they learned; however when it comes down to doing assignments or exams, they are often unsuccessful. Building on the research in the area of brain science and cognitive psychology, there are a number of pedagogically-sound strategies that faculty can implement to ensure that our students move from surface learning to deep learning.

Join this session to learn how to teach our students how to be more efficient and effective learners. Some strategies we will explore are: “learn it - link it”, retrieval, prediction, self-explanation, interleaving, and more.
